LoC: An Embassy

Egwene POV#

Egwene walks the streets of Cairhien for exercise. It is six days since Mangin was hanged.[1] She is in a good mood because the Wise Ones finally told her she can return to Tel'aran'rhiod, not in time for the next meeting in three days, but certainly in time for the meeting after.

Seeing all the people on the street, Egwene wonders if Elaida has a warrant out for her and she gets an attack of paranoia. She hears a rumor that Andorans in Aringill have declared for Dyelin. Egwene sees five or six Aes Sedai and realizes that they must be the White Tower embassy.[2] It is more than two months since Elaida's letter arrived.

Rand is not in the city. Egwene thinks he must have rediscovered Traveling but she has no idea how. She goes to the Wise Ones' tents to report. She finds Berelain with Amys, Bair and Sorilea. Rodera, a gai'shain, serves tea. She tells them about the embassy and that, at the least, they will try to control Rand. Berelain goes to tell Rhuarc. On the way out she makes a snide remark to Egwene and is called down by Sorilea. Amys kisses Berelain like a son or daughter when she leaves.[3] Egwene wonders why, but there is no honorable way for her to ask.

After Berelain leaves, Egwene tells the Wise Ones that the Aes Sedai might be after her as well for being friends with Rand.[4] The Wise Ones run her through strenuous exercises to test her health. Later, Egwene and the Wise Ones go to the sweat tents, but Egwene flees when Rhuarc, Timolan and Indirian join them. She returns to her own tent and is too tired to visit Tel'aran'rhiod that night. She dreams of Gawyn.

[#3] Again, Berelain seems to be held in mysteriously high esteem by the Wise Ones.
[#4] In reality it is because she is masquerading as full Aes Sedai.
