The Lord of the town is [Nathin Sarmain Vendare|../characters/n/nathin]. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] and [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] go into town to scout. [Selucia] summons [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] to [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] where she is talking with [Setalle|Setalle Anan]. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] wants to visit a hell, a low tavern known for crime and fighting. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] shows up, directed by [Harnan], and reports no [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] in [Maderin|../geography/altara/maderin/index]. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] says he knows a suitable place for [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag], [The White Ring|../geography/altara/maderin/white_ring]. It is actually an upscale in but [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] will not know the difference. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon], [Thom|Thom Merrilin], [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] and [Selucia] head through the circus toward the town. Townspeople watch [Miyora|miyora]'s leopards, [Latelle|latelle]'s bears and [Balat|balat] and [Abar|abar] eating fire. [Keilar|keilar], one of the guards at the town gate, tells them that the [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] said they should guard the town better. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] leads them to [The White Ring|../geography/altara/maderin/white_ring], an average inn. Mistress [Heilin|heilin], the innkeeper, greets them and tells the serving maid, [Jera|jera], to bring their best [Kiranaille|../geography/other] wine. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] orders ale. She asks him about courts, but he knows more of [Eharon|../history/eharon/index] and [Shiota|../history/shiota/index] than [Caemlyn] and [Tear|Tear (Country)] and [Shienar]. They both know [Ebou Dar]. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] asks about gambling, so they join a table of dice, three [Altaran|Altara] merchants [Camrin|camrin], [Kostelle|kostelle] and [Vane|vane], and a [Taraboner|Tarabon] merchant, Mistress [Alstaing|alstaing]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] watches the game and recognizes it as ''[Piri|../items/piri]'', Match, a game popular a thousand years before [Artur Hawkwing]. [Vane|vane] leaves suddenly. After they return to their table, [Thom|Thom Merrilin] returns with news that the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% killed in [Jurador]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] recalls he can fight it with the [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion]. There is also a [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] army ahead on the border of [Murandy].[1] They make anyone passing through drink an herbal tea.[2] The %%ot [sul'dam|Seanchan (People)]%% collar anyone who gets wobbly. They are also looking for a [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] impostor.[3] They begin planning to leave [Luca|Valan Luca] and the circus. They will take [Vanin|Chel Vanin] and the redarms as well as [Aludra|aludra]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] wants to head east if [Vanin|Chel Vanin] knows a pass through the mountains. When [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] and [Selucia] return, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and [Thom|Thom Merrilin] hustle them out of the inn. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] thinks the plot may be engineered by her sisters [Ravashi|ravashi] or [Chimal|chimal]. [Aurana|aurana] is too young. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] promises to get her to safety. Suddenly several approaching men pull their swords and attack. Together they kill all the attackers. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] kills the only woman. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] recognizes one of the men as [Vane|vane].[4] Out of nowhere, [Thom|Thom Merrilin] apologizes for seeing things that cannot be and [Selucia] nods.[5] Having killed a local merchant, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] realizes they must leave immediately and abandon [Luca|Valan Luca]'s circus.
