She reminds him he owes room and board for the month.
Scene 4 - Asylum#
Rand walks through the Foregate into Cairhien, where he meets Asan Sandair at the city gate. Asan Sandair checks Rand’s papers and allows him to pass. Rand then enters a building, exchanging his jacket for a robe, and passes rooms with patients, revealing it as a mental asylum (Cairhien Asylum) filled with loud voices, including a man’s cry, "Do you hear me? You are mine, Rand al’Thor."
Scene 6 - Tifan's Well#
At Verin’s residence, Lan and Moiraine recover from Healing as Adeleas and Verin step outside to tend to them. Verin acknowledges this and Lan, rising gingerly, is told by Moiraine they must leave soon, instructing him to have Tomas ready her horse due to his weakness.
Scene 7 - Nailed to a Door#
The Hunters for the Horn, led by Elyas on foot, ride through Arad Doman, with Uno grumbling about their slow pace. Reaching a river clearing, Elyas notes that the group they chase, including Fain, crossed here, with buildings visible beyond. Ingtar senses unease as they cross and enter a courtyard. Perrin spots a woman in a window, and with Ingtar, enters to see a family under attack by a man and a Fade. Elyas, at the doorway, remarks, "This is where it happened." Perrin turns back to find flies and insects buzzing, and Elyas explains the difference between vision and reality, denying he caused it. In the courtyard, someone informs Masema of something to see, leading him to a Fade nailed alive to a door, now dead, prompting speculation it was Padan Fain’s work.
Scene 8 - Blademaster#
Rand enters Errol’s room, an older man who, as a veteran of the Aiel War, cries out about Aiel breaching walls. Rand calms him, taking him for a walk, and they discuss sword forms including Cutting the Clouds, Kissing the Adder, Parting the Silk, and Reaping the Barley. Yann’s door-banging triggers Errol’s panic attack, nearly sparking a fight between Rand and Yann, who mentions seeing "famous residents" in the garden. Rand comforts Errol, resuming their talk.

Nynaeve assumes it’s mere comfort until death, but is corrected that it’s easily healed here. The Accepted asks Nynaeve to hold the girl’s hand during Healing, completed in moments, leaving Nynaeve stunned. In a courtyard, Liandrin describes exploring the Brown Ajah’s library, Gray Ajah’s statecraft, and Yellow Ajah’s Healing, pitching the Red Ajah’s focus on a different "disease." Nynaeve rejects the idea of men who channel as a disease. Liandrin notes the One Power slows aging, allowing Aes Sedai centuries to effect change. Liandrin asks Nynaeve if she's heard of the Three Arches, to which Nynaeve confirms she does, and Liandrin pushes Nynaeve to take the Accepted test when ask so that she can start training Nynaeve. With that, Liandrin buys some sweetcakes and leaves.Scene 11 - Sweetcakes#
Liandrin enters Mat's room with the sweetcakes. Mat muses if they're poisoned. Liandrin leaves, and as she locks the door from the outside, Mat mimics the motions she must do to lock the door. Once she's gone, he grabs a sweetcake and resumes work on slowly taking bricks out of a wall.Scene 12 - New Dormmate#
Egwene approaches her room and sees a lot of activity in the next room, along with nice furniture in the hallway and pillows blocking her door. A servant in deep red passes her by. She picks up the pillows and goes into the next room. Another novice is moving in and she tells Egwene just to set the pillows down. Egwene does, but then tells her to stop blocking her door. The new novice asks to see Egwene's room for design ideas for such a tiny place. She goes into Egwene's room and assumes that she just moved in as well, but soon after realizes her mistake. The novice tries to recover by noting the stitching on the blanket and correctly identifies it as from the Two Rivers. The novice smiles because she didn't think the Tower would let her live with the rest of the novices. When Egwene asks why, the novice says "the whole Daughter-Heir thing." When Egwene shows no recognition of that, the novice introduces herself as Elayne Trakand, Daughter-Heir of Andor and hesitantly says that Egwene is her subject. Egwene just gives an amused smile in return and tells Elayne her own name. Elayne talks about how some of the greatest pairings came from novices in adjacent rooms, like Cadsuane Melaidhrin and Elena Katab and wonders about their own future together.
Scene 13 - To Test or Not to Test#
Sheriam is visiting Alanna and her two warders, Ihvon and Maksim, are present. Alanna asks if Arinvar couldn't join them but Sheriam says that there are some things that only Aes Sedai should talk about. Instead of taking the hint, Alanna sits back and starts talking about the subject with her warders present. The conversation is about Liandrin's plan to have Nynaeve take the Accepted test. Everyone expresses their opinion. Alanna tells Sheriam that the reason all these women (Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne and others) and men (Logain, Mazrim Taim, and others) and are being born, and with so much power, is that the Last Battle is near. Sheriam seems uncomfortable with this notion. She says that Liandrin has called for a vote on this and that Alanna will have only one vote there, not three. She gets up to leave and then notices the saddlebags ready for a journey. Sheriam then wonders aloud if Alanna will even be there for the vote.Scene 14 - Where Is She Going?#
Nynaeve arrives at Liandrin's door only to find a novice with a basket full of linen closing the door. The novice tells her that Liandrin just left and maybe if Nynaeve is quick, she can catch her. Scene 15 - Atuan's Mill#
The Hunters of the Horn arrive at Atuans Mill, a town on the peninsula of Toman Head and decide to spend the night there and hopefully find information on Fain. As they travel through the town, they pass through a market with some interesting foods like lionfish, which is served fermented and is something that Loial likes. They all go into an inn, except for Elyas, who tells Perrin that he prefers to sleep under the stars. As they part, Elyas tells Perrin that the Shienarans are not his pack.
Scene 16 - Who Else Knows?#
At a nighttime camp on the way to Tar Valon, Moiraine and Verin chat. They are next to the Erinin River and can see Tar Valon in the distance downriver. Verin mentions the oddity of three Fades hunting a single Aes Sedai. Verin assumes it's because of one of the boys that returned with her to Tar Valon last autumn. She further assumes one of them is the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine surreptitiously puts her hand on her dagger and asks Verin who else knows. Moiraine starts approaching Verin and asking if Adeleas or Tomas knows but Verin tells her to stop. Verin looks down at Moiraine's hand on her dagger and tells her that she wanted to know how far she would go for the Dragon to lead him to victory. Verin believes that the Red sisters are wrong to try and cage the Dragon, since the world is still broken, and needs to be healed. Moiraine says that some things can't be healed. Moiraine says she needs an oath from Verin, but Verin refuses, saying that any oath now taken may need to be broken later for the greater good, and besides they almost always have loopholes[1].

Scene 19 - Before Breakfast or After?#
Egwene is giving Elayne a tour of the Tower and explaining the rules that novices live by when Farina, an Aes Sedai, passes by and acknowledges Elayne as "Daughter-Heir" and then Elayne responds back with her name and title, "Farina Sedai". That's when Egwene realizes that Elayne didn't need her explaining everything. Elayne says that six summers at the Tower did that, but she truly did want to chat with Egwene. They then run into Sheriam outside their rooms. Sheriam wants to know the name of the woman who managed to get all the fancy furniture into the Tower. Elayne refuses, starting that she would take any punishment that the other woman would have received. Sheriam says that means Elayne will be in her office, every morning for three months, feeling Sheriam's switch on her shoulders. Elayne accepts that and then asks if she should be in the office before or after breakfast, to which Sheriam replies before. Egwene gives a half smirk for Elayne standing up to Sheriam. Sheriam then asks Egwene where Nynaeve is, but she does not know.
Scene 20 - A Man in Northharbor#
In Cairhien’s Northharbor, Liandrin visits her son Aludran, using diluted crimsonthorn root to alleviate his chronic pain. Nynaeve observes from a distance, suspecting Liandrin is misusing the root to kill a man who can channel. Noticing Nynaeve, Liandrin confronts her; after a conversation where Nynaeve suggests alternative treatments, Liandrin, frustrated, throws her out of the room.
Scene 21 - Last Brick in the Wall#
Mat removes the final brick from a hole he has been carving in his cell wall at the White Tower, only to find it opens into another room, leaving him visibly disappointed. Min then appears at the hole, and after a brief conversation, she requests a tool to widen the opening. They exchange names, formally introducing themselves to one another.
Scene 22 - Tossed into a Pond#
Adeleas, Verin, Moiraine, Tomas, and Lan sit around a campfire, where Adeleas recounts the story of how Tomas became Verin’s Warder. She then asks about Moiraine and Lan’s meeting, met with a long silence before Adeleas begins crafting her own version. Moiraine interrupts, revealing the true account: near Chachin, she trailed Lan, suspecting him a Darkfriend, while he thought her a mercenary sent by his carneira. Finding him meditating by a pond, she attempted to seize his sword, but Lan, quick to react, grabbed her and threw her into the pond. Adeleas observes that a good Warder defends his Aes Sedai from a Trolloc, but the right one protects her from herself.Scene 23 - Glimpses of the Pattern#
Mat and Min are talking to each other through a hole in the wall between them. Min shows Mat a bottle of wine and then she comes through the hole and they start talking and sharing the wine. Mat asks her why she's in here, and she tells him that she sees glimpses of the Pattern. She is surprised that Mat doesn't want to know his future, except maybe how to get out of his room. Before she leaves, Min sees a vision of Mat stabbing Rand with the Ruby Dagger.
Scene 24 - Someone That I Loved Once#
In Cairhien, Rand and Selene share a bed, where Selene speaks of a past love who left her shattered, admitting she pretends Rand is him to feel whole again, a comfort she cherishes. Scene 25 - Jealousy Is Not the Best Look on You#
Elayne and Egwene are in Elayne’s room, where Elayne shows Egwene a fermented drink she crafted, using Air to accelerate the process. Elayne mentions her enjoyment of tinkering, a pastime shaped by her limited friendships and restricted fun as Daughter-Heir. The conversation turns to Nynaeve, sparked by Sheriam’s earlier question about her whereabouts. At the same time, Nynaeve nears Egwene’s door, ready to knock, but hears their voices from Elayne’s room and listens outside. Egwene vents frustration, claiming Nynaeve has it easy while she struggles, and feels Nynaeve is seldom there for her. Nynaeve, looking hurt, leaves after overhearing it. Elayne advises Egwene against jealousy toward Nynaeve, and though Egwene denies it, Elayne counters that her experience as Daughter-Heir gives her insight into such feelings.
Scene 26 - The Three Arches#
Nynaeve is in her room when someone knocks. She expects Egwene but finds Liandrin. Nynaeve begins to apologize for the prior incident, but Liandrin interrupts, stating she would undo what follows if possible, then instructs Nynaeve to follow her. They proceed to a chamber where Sheriam and Leane are present. A formal ceremony occurs with the following dialogue:
- Leane: Whom do you bring with you?
- Liandrin: One who comes as a candidate for Acceptance.
- Leane: Is she ready to face the Arches?
- Liandrin: She is ready to leave behind what she was, and, alone, passing through her fears, gain Acceptance.
- Leane: Does she know her fears?
- Liandrin: She has never faced them, but now is willing.
- Leane: Then let her face what she fears. The hour waits for no woman.
They escort Nynaeve to an adjacent room containing the Three Arches.

Lan prepares Moiraine’s horse, finding the poem from Bayle and deciding to keep it. Moiraine arrives and reveals that she knew she wanted Lan as her Warder after seeing three Trollocs staked outside a small town, their presence unfazing him. She declares he must go to the White Tower, insisting she will continue alone. Lan resists, but Moiraine discloses the full truth of Ishamael’s presence at the Eye of the World, admits Rand is alive, and states her loyalty now rests with him alone. She accuses Lan of failing her, noting that without Adeleas and Verin, she would be dead. Alanna, Ihvon, and Maksim approach, having agreed earlier to Moiraine’s request to escort Lan to the White Tower, by force if needed. She asserts they were never equals and rides away, leaving him behind.
Scene 28 - Invaders in the Night#
At nighttime in Atuan’s Mill, the Seanchan army sneaks into the village, capturing villagers as prisoners. Fighting erupts as Perrin and the Shienarans organize a defense, engaging the invaders. Loial, roaring fiercely, struggles against a half-dozen Seanchan soldiers binding him with ropes. Perrin intervenes, taking down two of the soldiers, freeing Loial to hurl the remaining Seanchan attackers aside with surprising strength. Ingtar calls for a rally, gathering the group around him. Two damane, escorted by soldiers, then approach and unleash a weave, creating a wall of air that slams into the Shienarans and their allies, knocking everyone unconscious.

Rand is again traveling to work at Cairhien Asylum. Celestin tells him that Yann was attacked last night, so Rand is taking over his position. He walks into the garden and sees that the patient is Logain. Rand explains that Yann had an accident and that he is going to fill in for him. He also says that the two of them probably have more in common that Logain and Yann did.
