Hearing the clacking of swords, he walks to the [Warder|Warders] training yard and watches the students practice. He recognizes [Galad|Galad Damodred] and [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] from [Elayne|Elayne Trakand]'s descriptions. They recognize him from [Egwene|Egwene alVere]'s descriptions and talk with him during a break. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] asks [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] about [Rand|Rand alThor]. Their talk develops into a wager, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] with a quarterstaff against both of them with their practice swords. Their trainer, [Hammar], watches closely. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] thumps both of them but nearly faints from hunger during the fight. After the fight, [Hammar] announces that [Jearom], the greatest swordsman ever, only lost once, to a farmer with a quarterstaff. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] is impressed with [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]'s skill, but [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] tells him that his father, [Abell|Abell Cauthon], is the best and [Rand|Rand alThor]'s father, [Tam|Tam alThor], is not far behind. When [Hammar] talks with [Mat|Matrim Cauthon], [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] slips and speaks in the [Old Tongue], then says he is from [Manetheren]. Confused and hungry, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] heads back to the [White Tower]. But he keeps the quarterstaff.
