TSR: A Missing Leaf

Perrin POV#

In the wolf dream, Perrin scouts the Two Rivers south toward Deven Ride. He spots some ravens and follows them into the Mountains of Mist. Back at the Waygate, he notices that there is now only one leaf on the door. The door is open meaning someone, or something, is passing through. He senses someone watching him and ducks just as an arrow passes. He circles around and spots Slayer. Slayer moves and Perrin follows him into the Westwood. Slayer begins speaking, telling Perrin that lots of Shadowspawn died at the locked Waygate, but it is now open and more are coming. At first he only brought a few hundred "to keep those fool Whitecloaks off balance and see that the renegade[1] died." Perrin's presence was a surprise. Perrin recognizes that this might be a trap, so he tries to wake up. Ila's potion prevents him from waking. He finds himself back in the TuathaAn' camp with Faile, so he just enjoys the moment.

Perrin finally wakes to find Faile and Ihvon in the wagon with him. He tells them about the Waygate. They convince him that he is too badly wounded to do anything but go to Emond's Field. Ihvon leaves to tell everyone that they are leaving, then Ila enters with his clothes. They help him out of the wagon where the Two Rivers men are waiting. Wil al'Seen, Ban al'Seen,[2] Dannil and his cousin Tell are there. The Tinker women danced the tiganza for them last night. Faile says that dance is nothing compared to the Saldaean sa'sara. Raen comes to bid them farewell. Perrin invites the TuathaAn to come to Emond's Field but they refuse. Aram stands to one side frowning.

They leave and a mile north Gaul, Bain and Chiad rejoin them. Perrin tells Gaul about Chiad suggesting Maiden's Kiss. Gaul misses a step, then considers taking her back to Hot Springs Hold as gai'shain. Perrin does not understand.[3] They arrive at Emond's Field and find that the surrounding land has been cleared and the town fortified. The town is surrounded by stakes and there are six catapults. Ihvon says he and Tomas showed the townspeople how, then they did everything themselves. The townspeople enthusiastically greet him as Perrin Goldeneyes. He sees Neysa Ayellin, Cilia Cole, Pel Aydaer, Daise Congar, Wit Congar and even Cenn Buie cheering for him. There is a wolf's head banner in the middle of town. Verin comes up and tells him that people need symbols. Faile wonders what Queen Morgase would think of it. It is clear that the people now know that Verin is Aes Sedai. She says there was no point in hiding it any longer. She checks Perrin's wound and says it is bad. They need Alanna to deal with it. Perrin asks her why she and Alanna really came to the Two Rivers. Verin ignores his question and sends for Alanna.

Notes (Possible Spoilers)#

[#1] This must be Padan Fain. Does this mean Slayer's sole mission in the Two Rivers was to kill him?
[#2] In early printings the name in the text is actually 'Ban Lewin.' This is corrected to Ban al'Seen in later printings.
[#3] Gaul and Chiad are beginning to like each other despite their clans.
