[Rand|Rand alThor] does not sleep that night thinking about the men who will die the next day. [Aviendha] gets up and leaves an hour before he rises. Still before dawn, the clan chiefs arrive for a final briefing. As they leave, [Bael] asks [Rand|Rand alThor] if he is certain about the [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear]' assignment. [Sulin] has been after the [Wise Ones|Aiel]. [Rand|Rand alThor] realizes that this must be what [Melaine] was talking to [Bael] about. 

[Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] arrives. He tells [Rand|Rand alThor] that [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] plans to use her strength to [Heal|Weaves] the wounded. [Rand|Rand alThor] figures she is angry because he took [Egwene|Egwene alVere] from her. [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] asks why he is wearing a sword and [Rand|Rand alThor] admits that it is to kill [Couladin]. Outside, [Rand|Rand alThor] finds his tent surrounded by [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear].[1] [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Aviendha] are in front.[2] [Sulin] leads the [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear]. They refuse to move until he agrees to let them escort him to the tower with [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Aviendha]. [Aviendha] got permission from [Amys], [Bair], [Melaine] and [Sorilea] to participate in the battle along side [Egwene|Egwene alVere]. They all go to the tower and [Rand|Rand alThor], [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Aviendha] climb to the top. [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Aviendha] [channel|True Source] a lightning storm over the [Shaido]. He recalls a weave and [channels|True Source] a giant fireball on a hill five miles away. In his head, a voice moans about [Ilyena|Ilyena Therin Moerelle].[3] [Rand|Rand alThor] nearly loses the void in shock, but he concentrates on [channeling|True Source] and searing the hills.

! __Mat__ POV

[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] rises two hours before dawn when [Melindhra] goes to a meeting of the [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear]. He heads south on [Pips]. He is diverted back toward the [Alguenya River] by bands of [Aiel]. As he heads south again, he encounters a force of [Tairens|Tear (Country)] and [Cairhienin|Cairhien (Country)]. With the looking glass he won from [Kin Tovere], he can see that they are headed into a [Shaido] trap. He thinks [Weiramon|Weiramon Saniago] must be a fool to have no scouts out front. The [Tairens|Tear (Country)] are led by [Estean|Estean Andiama] and [Melanril|Melanril Asegora] of House Asegora. [Melanril|Melanril Asegora] tells [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] that [Rand|Rand alThor] sent [Weiramon|Weiramon Saniago] back to [Tear|Tear (Country)] to deal with the pirates and brigands. [Daerid|Daerid Ondin] commands the [Cairhienin|Cairhien (Country)] pikemen. The other [Cairhienin|Cairhien (Country)] soldiers are led by [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] of House Delovinde. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] warns them of the [Shaido] trap and tells them how to counter it. [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] is doubtful and agrees to lead half the men only if [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] will lead the other half. With a shout of "%%ot [Los! Los caba'drin!|Compleat]%%" - "Horsemen forward!" in the [Old Tongue], [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] reluctantly takes the job and leads his men against the [Shaido].
