[Rand|Rand alThor] and [Tam|Tam alThor] return to the farm, finish chores and prepare for the evening meal. [Tam|Tam alThor] has numerous books including ''The Travels of [Jain Farstrider|Jain Charin]''. [Tam|Tam alThor] brings out his heron-mark sword. [Rand|Rand alThor] never knew [Tam|Tam alThor] even owned a sword.[1] Their closest neighbor is [Oren Dautry]. [Trollocs] attack and [Rand|Rand alThor] and [Tam|Tam alThor] run from the house. [Rand|Rand alThor] finds [Tam|Tam alThor] wounded and feverish.[2] [Tam|Tam alThor] tells [Rand|Rand alThor] what he learned of [Trollocs] from other soldiers' stories. [Rand|Rand alThor] takes the sword and goes back to the farm for the cart and supplies. In the house a [Trolloc|Trollocs] confronts him. [Narg] says a [Myrddraal|Fade] wants to talk to [Rand|Rand alThor]. He tells [Rand|Rand alThor] ''"Vlja daeg roghda,"'' "Put sword down." [Narg] attacks but [Rand|Rand alThor] kills him. [Rand|Rand alThor] searches the house and barn but the [Trollocs] destroyed nearly everything. Their animals are all dead and [Bela] is missing. The cart is destroyed. He uses [Tam|Tam alThor]'s sword to cut staffs from the cart to make a travois for [Tam|Tam alThor]. The sword is still razor sharp after hacking hard wood.[3]
