[Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] and a few other [Younglings] lead the [Aes Sedai] party north. [Dumai's Wells|Dumais Wells] are just off road to right. It is four days to the next water at [Alianelle Spring]. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] just learned a few days ago that the [Aes Sedai] hold [Rand|Rand alThor] prisoner. He thinks the beatings are disgusting. Even [Erian|Erian Boroleos] refused to participate after the second day, but [Galina|Galina Casban] insists. He reads [Egwene|Egwene alVere]'s letter several times a day. He hopes that he can somehow rescue [Min|Min Farshaw]. She does not deserve to be a prisoner. [Benji Dalfor] rides in from the north. He was mortally wounded by [Aiel] and dies after reporting to [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand]. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] sends [Jisao|Jisao Hamora] to halt the wagons and [Hal Moir] to ready [Rajar] and the other [Younglings] at the rear. [Galina|Galina Casban] is angry that he called a halt. She tells him that the [Aiel] are the [Shaido] that [Sevanna] sent as escort. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] tells her they killed one of his men, so they might be [Rand|Rand alThor]'s [Aiel]. She agrees that they should be cautious.

[Rand|Rand alThor] is suffering in the chest. He can feel that [Alanna|Alanna Mosvani] is near. [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon] moans about the dark. Only [Galina|Galina Casban], [Erian|Erian Boroleos] and [Katerine|Katerine Alruddin] beat him more than once. He spends his time feeling the shield. He feels the box being moved from the wagon, but it does not open. Fearing that they will leave him in the chest all night, he screams for them to let him out.

[Perrin|Perrin Aybara], [Rhuarc], [Sorilea], [Dobraine|Dobraine Taborwin] and [Kiruna|Kiruna Nachiman] peer over a rise. Forty thousand [Shaido] surround a bunch of wagons. [Kiruna|Kiruna Nachiman] says there are two or three hundred women [channeling|True Source]. Back below the rise, they prepare their attack. [Dannil|Dannil Lewin] leads the [Two Rivers] men, [Dobraine|Dobraine Taborwin] leads the [Cairhienin|Cairhien (Country)] and [Nurelle|Havien Nurelle] leads the [Winged Guards|Mayene]. The [Wise Ones|Aiel] and the [Aes Sedai] are to stay back from the fighting. [Amys] is near the [Aes Sedai] led by [Bera|Bera Harkin] and [Kiruna|Kiruna Nachiman]. [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] goes on foot because he does not want to ride [Stayer] or [Stepper] into such a battle. [Aram] smiles in anticipation. 

As they attack the [Shaido], [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] calls to the wolves to come. [Loial] is deadly with his huge axe. [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] sees [Kiruna|Kiruna Nachiman], [Bera|Bera Harkin], [Faeldrin|Faeldrin Harella] and [Masuri|Masuri Sokawa] in the thick of battle and wonders what they are doing there.[1] [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] hears a hollow boom, then a gateway opens up and [Asha'man] pour through.[2] [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] thinks that he will never come home to [Faile|Zarine Bashere].

In the chest, [Rand|Rand alThor] feels three points of the shield tied off. Following [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon]'s instructions he unknots them. He breaks through the shield and crushes the remaining three points with [Spirit|One Power]. He can only [channel|True Source] where he can see, so he blows up the box with [Air|One Power]. There are three [Aes Sedai] by the box. Two are unconscious and one angular woman is screaming.[3] [Rand|Rand alThor] [stilled|stilling] them. [Min|Min Farshaw] is also near the chest and she is okay. She wants him to make a gateway, but he does not know the area yet. [Rand|Rand alThor] begins knocking out and shielding the other [Aes Sedai] including [Erian|Erian Boroleos], [Katerine|Katerine Alruddin], [Sarene Nemdahl] and [Coiren|Coiren Saeldain]. He cannot find [Galina|Galina Casban]. 

[Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] rides up[4] and offers to take [Min|Min Farshaw] away, but she says she is staying with [Rand|Rand alThor]. She tells [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] that [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] also loves [Rand|Rand alThor]. [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] tells [Jisao|Jisao Hamora] to rally the [Younglings]. He tells [Rand|Rand alThor] that he will see him dead one day. As [Gawyn|Gawyn Trakand] rides away, a full [Asha'man] starts to attack him, but [Rand|Rand alThor] knocks him down. 

[Taim|Mazrim Taim] arrives and addresses the man as [Gedwyn|Charl Gedwyn]. [Taim|Mazrim Taim] says he went to visit [Rand|Rand alThor] in [Cairhien|Cairhien (City)]. He offers to [Heal|Weaves] [Rand|Rand alThor] but [Rand|Rand alThor] refuses. [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon] screams about killing everyone. There are about two hundred [Asha'man] there. They have created a dome of [Air|One Power] that secures the camp area. A dozen [Asha'man] are holding a dozen [Aes Sedai] including [Nesune|Nesune Bihara] prisoner. [Rand|Rand alThor] sees [Alanna|Alanna Mosvani] in another group of nine [Aes Sedai] and realizes they were the ones who followed from [Caemlyn]. [Perrin|Perrin Aybara], [Aram], [Loial], [Dobraine|Dobraine Taborwin], [Nandera] and [Sulin] are also there. [Rhuarc] and most of the other [Aiel], the [Mayeners|Mayene], the [Cairhienin|Cairhien (Country)] and the [Two Rivers] men are still out with the [Shaido]. 

[Taim|Mazrim Taim] wants to let the dome stay until they learn the area well enough to [Travel|Weaves], even if their allies outside all die. [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] argues telling [Rand|Rand alThor] that [Dannil|Dannil Lewin], [Ban|Ban alSeen], [Wil|Wil alSeen] and [Tell|Tell Lewin] are still out there. [Rand|Rand alThor] orders him to open the dome, then have the [Asha'man] kill the [Shaido]. He wants to send a message to [Sevanna]. Of the [Asha'man] he knows, [Jur Grady], [Damer|Damer Flinn], [Fedwin|Fedwin Morr], [Eben|Eben Hopwil], [Jahar|Jahar Narishma] and [Torval|Peral Torval], only [Torval|Peral Torval] is full [Asha'man].[5] The [Asha'man] use [Earth|One Power] and [Fire|One Power] to slaughter thousands of [Shaido]. The [Shaido] finally break and run. 

The rest of the rescue forces, including [Rhuarc], slowly join the others in the camp. There are twenty-three [Tower|White Tower] [Aes Sedai] prisoners, [Galina|Galina Casban] not among them.[6] [Kiruna|Kiruna Nachiman], [Bera|Bera Harkin] and [Alanna|Alanna Mosvani] lead the nine [Aes Sedai] to congratulate [Rand|Rand alThor]. [Merana|Merana Ambrey] stays at the back. [Rand|Rand alThor] is furious telling them that he said only six could come. He will now place them on the same level at the other [Aes Sedai]. They must kneel to him. At first they refuse, but [Taim|Mazrim Taim] again orders them and nearly smiles. The nine [Salidar Aes Sedai][7] swear fealty to [Rand|Rand alThor], "the unstained tower, broken, bent knee to the forgotten sign."[8]
