A wind rises in [Cairhien|Cairhien (Country)]. It crosses the [Erinin River] at [Maerone] and [Aringill] and arrives in [Caemlyn]. It is a few weeks since the end of [The Fires of Heaven]. The setting is the [Royal Palace] courtyard at the heart of the [Inner City|Caemlyn] of [Caemlyn]. [Rand|Rand alThor] practices the sword against five men while a host of nobles and [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear] watch. After the fight, [Sulin] pays the men and [Enaila] brings a towel.[1] [Jalani] is the youngest of the [Maidens|Maidens of the Spear]. High ranking [Andoran|Andor] nobles in attendance are Lady [Arymilla|Arymilla Marne], Lady [Elenia|Elenia Sarand], Lord [Jarid|Jarid Sarand], Lady [Karind|Karind Anshar], Lady [Naean|Naean Arawn], Lord [Lir|Lir Baryn][2] and Lord [Nasin|Nasin Caeren]. The lesser nobles include Lord [Henren], Lady [Carlys|Carlys Ankarin], Lady [Daerilla|Daerilla Raened] and Lord [Elegar]. They praise [Rand|Rand alThor] for his performance, comparing him to [Souran Maravaile] and [Jearom]. [Souran Maravaile] was [Hawkwing|Artur Hawkwing]'s greatest general and husband of [Ishara], first Queen of [Andor]. [Davram Bashere] watches from a gilded chair. He asks why [Rand|Rand alThor] is practicing since [Rand|Rand alThor] does not need weapons to protect himself. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] then throws a dagger at [Rand|Rand alThor]. [Rand|Rand alThor] uses %%ot [saidin|Said]%% to stop the dagger and tells [Bashere|Davram Bashere] that he could kill him for throwing that dagger. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] says his wife [Deira|Deira Bashere] would not like that and would probably set out hunting [Taim|Mazrim Taim] again. [Rand|Rand alThor] recalls his surprise at learning that of [Bashere|Davram Bashere]'s nine thousand horse, the nobles and officers brought wives. 

[Rand|Rand alThor] hears [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon] in his head moaning about [Ilyena|Ilyena Therin Moerelle]. [Enaila] and [Somara] eye him closely. They talk of [Aes Sedai], [Whitecloaks|Children of the Light] in [Amadicia] (ruled by [Ailron]) and [Sammael] in [Illian|Illian (Country)]. Mention of the [Forsaken] unsettles the nobles, especially since [Lord Gaebril|Rahvin] was [Rahvin]. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] mentions the plan by [Rand|Rand alThor] and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] for taking [Illian|Illian (Country)]. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] wonders if [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] studied under [Agelmar|Agelmar Jagad] in [Shienar]. He mentions the [Green|Green Ajah] sister, [Egwene|Egwene alVere], in [Cairhien|Cairhien (City)]. [Somara] appears with [Rand|Rand alThor]'s clothes. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] again mentions [Rand|Rand alThor] needs the [Aes Sedai]. The one young [Aes Sedai] they found in the city ran screaming when she heard [Rand|Rand alThor]'s name.[3] [Rand|Rand alThor] says there are hundreds ready to support him. [Bashere|Davram Bashere] realizes the [White Tower] really split. Everyone knows [Siuan Sanche] was deposed and stilled. As he thinks of [Aes Sedai], [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon] moans that the [Hall of the Servants|Paaran Disen] is broken forever. The only [Aes Sedai] [Rand|Rand alThor] trusted was [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] and she warned him to trust no others. 

[Tumad Ahzkan], a [Saldaean|Saldaea] soldier, enters to announce that [Mazrim Taim] is at the gates.
