It is nine days since [Egwene|Egwene alVere] was captured. [Tarna|Tarna Feir] climbs the stairs to [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan]'s quarters; she avoids the corridors where she might run into sisters of another [Ajah|Aes Sedai]. On her way she thinks on [Pevara|Pevara Tazanovni]'s question from almost two weeks ago. Which [Red Ajah] sisters can be trusted to bond [Asha'man], even with [Tsutama|Tsutama Rath]'s blessing? She has only one name on her list and that one will not work.[1] [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] and [Meidani] are in the sitting room; they spend a lot of time together. 

[Tarna|Tarna Feir] announces that she has the morning reports and [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] sends [Meidani] away. [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] confides that they were pillow-friends and she might allow it again to question her. That is rare outside of [novices] and [Accepted], though [Tarna|Tarna Feir] recalls [Galina|Galina Casban] making a pass at her. [Tarna|Tarna Feir] prefers men. [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] allowed the weave of [Keeping|Weaves#k] to be shared widely and it seems to be working. [Tarna|Tarna Feir] has no news on the other nine moles. There is no news on locating the [seals|Seals]. The harbors are blocked so that the city is starting to suffer. [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] orders penances with [Silviana|Silviana Brehon] for any [Sitters] who do not deliver enough workers to dismantle the chains. [Tarna|Tarna Feir] reports that [Egwene|Egwene alVere] spends half her days with [Silviana|Silviana Brehon]. [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] wants her tamed but not broken so the [White Tower] will be strong. [Tarna|Tarna Feir] recalls [Galina|Galina Casban] beating her block out of her. [Elaida|Elaida do Avriny aRoihan] wants [Egwene|Egwene alVere] to attend her tonight.

[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and his party leave [Maderin] and head into the forest as soon as they are out of sight of any farms. The dice start up again.[2] Two days later they stop for a midday rest. They are three hundred miles west of [Damona Mountains]; he wants to reach them in a week. [Vanin|Chel Vanin] knows a smugglers' pass. After the pass they are two days from [Murandy]. 

[Lopin] and [Nerim] serve lunch to [Mat|Matrim Cauthon], [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag], [Selucia] and [Setalle|Setalle Anan]. Afterwards, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] uses [Aludra]'s strikers to light his pipe. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] and [Aludra] play stones. The [Redarms|Band of the Red Hand] including [Metwyn] and [Harnan] take care of the sixty pack horses that [Luca|Valan Luca] purchased in [Maderin]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] gave a purse of gold to [Petra|Petra Anhill] and [Clarine|Clarine Anhill] when they left. [ Leilwin|Egeanin Tamarath], [Domon|Bayle Domon], [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] and [Amathera|Amathera Aelfdene Casmir Lounault] are also nearby. [Noal|Noal Charin] plays [Snakes and Foxes|Finn] with [Olver]. The game reminds [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] of the [Eelfinn|Finn] and maybe the [Aelfinn|Finn] being in his head. [Joline|Joline Maza], [Blaeric|Blaeric Negina] and [Fen|Fen Mizar], [Bethamin|Bethamin Zeami] and [Seta|Seta Zarbey], [Teslyn|Teslyn Baradon] and [Edesina|Edesina Azzedin] are there. [Joline|Joline Maza] and [Edesina|Edesina Azzedin] are now teaching both [Bethamin|Bethamin Zeami] and [Seta|Seta Zarbey]. 

[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] thinks the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% is following [Luca|Valan Luca]'s circus.[3] [Luca|Valan Luca] is still heading for [Murandy] as well. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] refused [Healing|Weaves#h] after [Maderin] and now his wounds are infected. A [blacklance] wriggles out from under the log [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] and [Amathera|Amathera Aelfdene Casmir Lounault] are sitting on. [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] starts after it, but [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] tells him to let it go. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] lets [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] kiss her and he does a thorough job.[4] She then sends [Selucia] for ointments for his wounds. 

Riders approach and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] mounts [Pips]. They are [Vanin|Chel Vanin] and [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde]. [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] tells [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] that [Vanin|Chel Vanin] updated him on [Nalesean|Nalesean Aldiaya] and the others. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] is angry that [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] is in [Altara] instead of being with [Egwene|Egwene alVere]. [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] tells him [Egwene|Egwene alVere] really is the [Amyrlin|Aes Sedai] and they are off to besiege [Tar Valon]. They can [Travel|Weaves#t] like the [Dragon Reborn|Rand alThor]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] sees the colors spin and resolve into [Rand|Rand alThor] talking with an [Aes Sedai] with gray hair in a bun.[5] [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] brought three banners of horse, four thousand mounted crossbowmen and the masons. He left three banners of horse and five of foot in [Murandy] with orders to move north into [Andor]. King [Roedran|Roedran Analoy] paid them so they have plenty of money. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] introduces [Talmanes Delovinde] to [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] grabs his hat and %%ot [ashandarei]%% and orders [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] to take them to the [Band|Band of the Red Hand]. The [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] have camps scattered all over. There was a landslide so the pass [Vanin|Chel Vanin] was planning to use is now blocked. The [Damona Mountains] were made during the [Breaking] so other passes are unlikely. They set out riding and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] starts to plan how to get out of [Altara].
